This blog is dedicated to the sublime instruments called nose flutes and which produce the most divine sound ever. We have chosen to discard all the native models from S. Pacific and Asia, for they need fingering to be played. We'll concentrate on "buccal cavity driven" nose flutes : the well patented and trademarked metal or plastic ones, plus, by a condemnable indulgence, some wooden craft or home-made productions.

Humanatone in Heaney Magic catalog

Just another ad for the Humanatone, coming from the 1924 Heaney Magic catalog. It is very different from the advertisement this magic items company published the same year in Popular Mechanics (see here), and which was hand drawn.
This one gives more room for the text, directly copied from the Humanatone Co. user manual.

  1. Those were the days....when the Nose Flute was considered to be "wonderful" and its effect "charming". It is quite something to state that "no (other) musical instrument ever produced sweeter music" and that "there has never been anything made to equal it".

I guess the Nose Flute belongs to the same category as the Rubric's Cube and the Yo-Yo. It is pretty cult, retro style. The concept has been there all along; it really depends on the maker and the player what is produced on it. Just like the Rubric's Cube and the Yo-Yo have been jazzed-up by fusing the old concept with modern applications such as light effects, interactive and 3D designs, the Nose Flute has moved on considerably, particularly with the scientifically approached, professional design of the Bocarina.

The Nose Flute is a monster when performed well electrically and enhanced well digitally. There literally are no boundaries, just like there are no boundaries with the possibilities on the electric guitar. It really is all about imagination and dare. The electric guitar only needed somebody like Jimi Hendrix to radically push the boundaries of its perception. The Nose Flute only needs a proper feature in a blockbuster movie and a proper performance on Pop Idols to bring it back into the public eye, back into mainstream consciousness. It once was quite the thing. It could easily be just that once again.

I am amazed by the statement that "Agents, streetment (?), demonstrators, can make more money selling these (Nose Flutes) than any other article". This could mean two things, possibly applying both at the same time: the Nose Flute was the best-selling article from the catalogue, and/or the Nose Flute sold very easily, generating considerable sums of money quickly. I remember that one American politician at the time funded his rally by playing and selling the Nose Flute.
