5th International & Interspecies Nose Flute Day!

Here, at Noseflute.org, we regard the Nose Flute day as the perfect moment to spread nosefluting, and particularly to initiate someone to our noble art. That's the reason we decided to make a specific little nose flute for our C.E.O., my cat Patafix.

I also wanted to test a new device I received (I intend to use it at School of Architecture): it is an extrusion pen. You plug it on USB, stuff it with a ABS plastic wire, and the pen melts the wire while extruding the plastic. With it, one can build (literally 'draw') small (and fragile) little structures.


So, I wanted to see if it was possible to build a small nose flute for Patafix. I chose 'glow in the dark' ABS wire to do so, and began to draw a basic shape, then to fill it. It is rather difficult to master the pen and I was not able to produce a regular shape. I felt like drawing with a pastry bag disgorging custard.


Then I created the inner airway (very uggly, uh?), and a nose hood adapted to Patafix' snout:


Finally, I sharpened the labium and sanded the flute as I could to smooth the surfaces, added an elastic cord with 2 pink beads (Patafix is a girl, don't forget it!):


Yoohooh! It glows in the night!



At first, the moustachioed C.E.O. of noseflute.org was a bit reluctant in trying the instrument...



But after a while, Patafix adopted the nose flute and played a beautiful music piece (unfortunately, I hadn't my recorder with me at this moment...). Anyway, she will mostly use it as a bird call…

International Nose Flute Day - NFHoF nomination

Today is the 3rd INFD - International Nose Flute Day! The 14th of June was chosen as an anniversary of the registration of William Carter's Nasalette patent, the first urban nose flute. Have you planned something specific? Are you going to celebrate this day?

Cornelius Degen (1956-2014)

Cornelius Degen was a German storyteller and musician using nose flutes in his performances. But more than that, he was a fine craftsman - notably making wooden "magic" boxes - and an inventive nose flute builder. Cornelius built beautifully designed Nasenflöten, finely crafted, and invented a sliding air duct cover allowing one to set the global tuning of the flute, from medium to sharp. We had previously written a post about him and his work.



We just learned that Cornelius Degen passed away last February, after a long disease. We are very sad, and the nose flute world lost an active advocate of the little wind instrument. Noseflute.org has decided to nominate him as member of the Nose Flute Hall of Fame, in the "Producers" section.

The Nosy Diva, who knew him personally, wrote this little message :

I met Cornelius Degen at the Kulturelle Landpartie in the Wendland two years ago. There were always lots of people looking at the fascinating things he had made and the stories he told about them. There was a litle butterfly magically moving his wings, a little golden ball that made fairylike sound and this tall, gentle man speaking like a storyteller of the ancient times. I was so fascinated that I did not see at once he had nose flutes also, very fine, beautifully crafted instruments with interesting details.
I remember him well and I am very sad that he left us at such young age. He was a great inventor, craftsman, storyteller and a beautiful person.
Danke Cornelius to have reminded us of the magic of life and little things! For your creativity and research and craftsmanship, you absolutely deserve a place in the Nose Flute Hall of Fame!

Today is International Nose Flute Day!!

To the readers of this blog: I've been away from noseflute.org for a long time. In April, I had to face a lack of new info deserving publication and at the same time, I had to focus on the completion of my work for an art exhibition. Then I got longly sick. Finally I'm back, here, but the posting rhythm may slow a bit down, from now on. Thank you for your loyalty, and particularly to those of you who enquired about my "disappearance"

Here are some pictures of the exhibition « En Quête de l'Ange » ("In the Quest for the Angel"), set in Nancy, Lorraine, France, for which I built 3 composed pieces. One of those photographic compositions is called « Le Souffle des Anges »("The Angels' Breath") and is totally devoted to nose flute playing.

This collective exhibition - with great names! : Ernest Pignon-Ernest, Eric Poitevin, Dominique Petitgand ... — encounters a good success: 5,000 visitors so far, and in just more than a month. If you happen to pass by Nancy, pay us a visit!

International Nose Flute Day ?

Today, dear fellows in nosefluting, is the 120th anniversary of the registration of the patent US477167. On Jun. 14, 1892, William Carter's Nasalette patent was acted. Yes, the document was filed earlier (1891), and the instrument was invented even earlier. But on that 14th of June, the first modern nose flute got an official existence and a full juridic anteriority. Happy Birthday Nasalette!

So, I propose to choose today's date for the International Nose Flute Day !
