This time, no hesitation, it is a Jew's harp and other funny gizmos on the desk:

5.- Commercials
This is probably the funniest part of this series of posts: Jean Shepherd playing along real commercials. And very often, his playing sounds like a comment turning the message into derision. How could the advertisers have accepted that? Incredible. Well, this funny practice stopped in 1966. The main targets were cigarettes and beers, but there were a few other victims.

This is exactly the one thing I like about bad, "funny" nose fluting: mocking and playing along commercials and tacky songs, very much in the fashion of cartoons such as Ren & Stimpy. Wouldn't be surprised to hear a nose flute on Primus's albums one of these days.
ReplyDeleteIndeed amazing that he got away with basically bashing the products and the advertisers that paid for the show and his wages....!!! Great stuff!
I wouldn't be surprised at all if Dutch presenter Jack Spijkerman modelled his show and on- air behaviour on Jean Shepherd.
Yes, i can't imagine that nowadays... A radio mocking its financers...
