This blog is dedicated to the sublime instruments called nose flutes and which produce the most divine sound ever. We have chosen to discard all the native models from S. Pacific and Asia, for they need fingering to be played. We'll concentrate on "buccal cavity driven" nose flutes : the well patented and trademarked metal or plastic ones, plus, by a condemnable indulgence, some wooden craft or home-made productions.

Nose Flute and Ukette on Radio Caraib Nancy

Yesterday, I was invited as member of the Conseil de Développement durable du Grand-Nancy (C3D) to express my feelings and opinions about this citizen think tank, on RCN radio (Nancy, FR). I was asked to take some music with me, so I brought Low Down Blues, by Lloyd Buford Threlkel (that has been cut in the middle of the nose flute solo, alas...), but also my sopranino ukette and a special color Bocarina.

Dominique Valck, President of the C3D, shot a little video of my performance, here it is:
(sorry for the ukette out of tune: thermic shock from the winter chill)

  2. Very nice video! I like the warm sound of the ukette, probably due to the tuning being a bit off. I very much like the simplified melody on the flute, which works wonders for the instrument. Nice interview too! Low Down Blues was probably the right choice to serve as an official example of correct nose flute play.

    1. Thank you for your very kind comment, Maikel! This ukette is a very good instrument (by LoPrinzi). Anyway, I would have prefered to have it perfectly tuned... Simple melody: when I'm on stress, I prefer not to try some saltos or double somersaults :)

  3. It sounds so much better this way, playing easy notes instead of trying to fill everything up with (half-reached) notes! I couldn't help but notice you also own and play a dobro ukelele, which is simply awesome. I would very much like to hear a (simple) slide on that one as accompaniment to the nose flute...
