This blog is dedicated to the sublime instruments called nose flutes and which produce the most divine sound ever. We have chosen to discard all the native models from S. Pacific and Asia, for they need fingering to be played. We'll concentrate on "buccal cavity driven" nose flutes : the well patented and trademarked metal or plastic ones, plus, by a condemnable indulgence, some wooden craft or home-made productions.

A new cardboard nose flute

Shuenping Chiou, our taiwanese friend and amateur nose flute builder, has just released a new cardboard nose flute template. It has a very nice and simple design (simple to build!) and might be printed "for real" and commercialized.

Chiou (YW) has also tested a duct tape version, which offers a better solidity (here, beside his "cat paw" home made flute.

  2. Great design!. Looks nice, simple and functional.

I wonder if there's not too much taper on the windway.

The duck tape is a good idea, I may try it on one of your cardboard pattern.

  3. Thank you very much~Antoine and Maikel Mei and master Don Luis :)

    Master Don Luis
I just now test to try not too much taper on the windway.
It's really easy to play ,but the treble would be more difficult to blow, and sound becomes whisper.

I'll try to find the balance :)

  4. My opinion is that the air exit is a bit too broad. But Chiou will continue to test and correct at the best!

  5. After testing, find the key in the lower half of the arc.

If made it flate polyline like development graph, that will be not easy to play a sound.
(At that time, I can not think of how to mark arc, so marked polyline on the graph.)

If made it arc look like my photo & 3D graph, the treble and bass will easy to play more.
So now I did a little change on the 3D graph, to show how to make the arc at lower half. (People can adjust the arc and find his best sound.)

  6. @YW I think your design has great potential. You are a fine designer and craftsman.

I feel a little strange being called "master". I think I do not deserve it.

Hehe, using "Don" with my name is arrogant enough.

  7. How great to be able to personally adjust the sound of the instrument! I would be very interested in getting the lowest possible note on the nose flute. Looking forward to your future modifications! Alll the very best.
